Strong in Body, Resolute in Faith, Leading in Wisdom

FAITH

We didn't see then what we see and know now.

- Jer Baker

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A MAN?

When I became a man…

I said, "Jesus, here I am, send me”.

I took responsibility for the welfare and growth of my family, friends, and neighbors.

I sought God in repentance and wisdom for my mission each morning and evening.

It's been a lifetime journey to figure out what it is to be a man. When Jesus got my attention and I accepted his invitation to trust and follow him, the end goal of my journey changed to, what does it mean to be a man in God's eyes. That was 32 years ago and it's taken me until two days ago to write out what I think is the answer. To the right, is what I believe is a simple summary of Biblical Manhood. It probably isn't complete or all encompassing, but I see it as solid spot from which to start.

It sounds like a setup for a joke, except...it isn't a joke, though the topics they discuss are kinda wild, but no joke, and...no bar, sorry. These 3 men have 5 doctorates between them and in my view, have a keen sense of the big picture of the universe as well as an honest skepticism.

I appreciate both the big picture view as well as the honest skepticism, as I came to faith by attempting to addressing both in my questions. I didn't just accept Jesus into my heart (still don't know exactly what that means) because it felt good or that I was afraid of getting smoked in hell. My decision to accept Jesus's claim to be the only way to the God who created everything, took over a year of digging into the Bible (to disprove it initially) and other religions and philosophies. As I explored the fundamentals of Christianity, Mormonism, Native American beliefs, and Eastern Philosophy I realized someone had to be right because some religions claimed that many roads lead to heaven or enlightenment, while others claimed there is only one way. I hoped the later wasn't the answer.

As I'm sure you've deduced, the later, specifically, Christianity turned out to be the right answer. I don't mean to say, "right answer" in any type of arrogance, but to say, that, there are in fact, wrong answers. As I sit here and type, I think back to how I felt as Christians boldly stated they were right and everyone else were wrong. It honestly got my blood boiling and I don't want to do that to you, so please hear me out. After a LOT of years of study and doubts and more study, I say this in all respect to all who have a different faith than me, I found Christianity to be complete. Not without unanswered questions, but no religion or philosophy can say that. ALL religions have some good in them, some nobility, and good people who do good things. The challenge comes when they are compared to the entirety of the Biblical story and specifically Jesus. If Jesus didn't die on the cross AND rise from the dead, he is not worth following, in fact, if not true, we should all run away as fast as possible. Why? Because he didn't just teach good ideas, he claimed to be God and said not only that he would die, but that he would rise from the dead. If he didn't do those things, then he was loony at best, psycho at worst - certainly not worthy to devote one's life to following.

SO...when I say, right, I encourage you to dig in for yourself. You can start with some strong science from these 3 smart gents. And if you do decide to dig in, consider this about Jesus. The Bible is very clear, Jesus willingly gave up his life because he the Holy Spirit, and Father God want YOU in their family.
